Needle Felted Landscapes

Needle felting as fine art is an accidental love that satisfies a part inside me that I hadn’t realized was missing. Starting with a sheet of felt on a piece of foam, I carefully place pieces of wool fibers and secure them to the sheet by piercing it with a needle repeatedly. Similar to painting, I work from photographs but I also use images that I see in dreams or my imagination. I approach the process the same as painting: blocking in shapes and moving through the values until the lightest lights and finest details finish the piece. By layering different colors of wool on the composition or hand mixing the fibers before application, my goal is to create as accurate color renderings as I’m able to achieve with oil paints. I feel satisfied that my felted landscapes are achieving my intent as they are commonly misunderstood to be painted.
